IRVINE, Calif. – The COVID-19 pandemic has forced businesses around the world to adapt. Online Trading Academy is no exception. With fewer students unable to attend in-person classes, OTA has ramped up their delivery of On-Demand classes.
Although online accessibility has been one of OTA’s core components since it started in 1997, some classes previously required students to visit one of more than 40 franchise locations around the world, where they could interact with instructors in a live, real-time, remote format. Extended Learning Track Sessions, which track market performance in real time, with guidance from an instructor, also included live sessions and interactive chat abilities.
However, student feedback, along with concerns about public health, have led OTA officials to accelerate a plan to create “On-Demand” courses that students can take anytime from anywhere. These On-Demand courses consist of shorter, condensed lessons that students can complete in 5–10 minutes and are blended with learning labs. Students can participate in these “bite-sized” classes virtually using a computer or mobile device.
They’re specially designed for students who may not have a lot of time in their schedules but are eager to learn the critical knowledge about trading and investments that OTA has been providing for more than 15 years.
“We know that people have limited time, and our goal is to ensure that students can learn in a fashion that suits them, rather than force them to adapt to our time and place,” says Steve Albin, vice president of Education Operations. “COVID has made it clear that every educational organization in the country has been playing catch-up.”
On-Demand options are now available for the foundational course, Core Strategy, plus the Strategic Investor and Futures asset classes. The company plans to roll out its Options class by the end of December 2020.
Company President Mike Richardson said Online Trading Academy has been responsive to student needs and stays current with technology. The COVID-19 crisis has been challenging for everyone, including OTA, but it has also provided an ability to deliver more flexible options for students.
OTA has also seen a spike in interested students, especially in the last year. Some are new, some have taken classes previously and want to brush up on new developments, and others take them regularly to hone certain trading and investing skills.
Online Trading Academy’s mobile app has been downloaded more than 300,000 times and has hosted more than seven million user sessions annually. The company had already been talking about options to provide more space – whether physical or virtual – to accommodate growing student demand.
Albin, the vice president of Education Operations, says that some classes consist of more than 1,000 students, and there have also been discussions about adding special events for students, beyond the traditional curriculum.
“We’re always looking for the best tools to give our students a seamless connection with instructors and each other,” he says. “New tools, like real-time student polling for instant feedback, will help our instructors ensure that our students are grasping key concepts.”
