(Reuters) – Dutch brewer Heineken (OTC) announced Monday that it will be closing its Russian business after having previously said it would stop new investment and exports to Russia. It had been anticipating a 400 million euro charge.

It stated that Heineken’s Russian ownership was no longer viable and sustainable in today’s environment.

Heineken, the Russian brewery that brews Botsjkarev and Ochota brands, stated it wanted an orderly transfer. It also said it would keep the business running during transition to minimize the chance of being nationalized.

Company stated that it would pay the 1,800 workers their salary until December 31, 2018.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy is the President of Ukraine and has called on international corporations to quit the Russian market following the massive military incursion against its neighbor a month back.

Rival Carlsberg (OTC), Russia’s most powerful brewer Baltika is still selling beer, but it announced that earlier this month, it was undertaking a strategic review of the company in the country. It also said that it would suspend Russian brewing of the name brand. Nordnet analyst Per Hansen said that Heineken’s decision “probably does not make Carlsberg’s situation easier.”

Heineken stated earlier in March that it will cease making and selling beer in Russia, and would not accept net financial gains from those operations.
