Disney vows to help repeal ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law

Following Gov. On Monday Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida signed “Don’t Say Gay” legislation into law. the Walt Disney CompanyThe legislation was condemned and the group pledged to work for its repeal.

“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” the company said in a statement. Our goal is to see this law repealed in the legislature and struck down in court. We will also continue to support state and national organisations working towards that end.

After CEO Bob Chapek was criticised for failing to speak up earlier and more passionately in advance of the Florida Senate bill’s passage, Disney has expressed its opposition publicly to the law. The company’s poor response to employees prompted employees to stage a protest walkout. Since then, Disney has been trying hard for reconciliation with staff members and LGBTQA+ communities.

Already, the company pledged to give $5 million to groups, such as Human Rights Campaign. The company’s executives are now talking to their employees at town hall meetings and discussing how they can best serve the community.

Pixar employees have been asking for the company’s “decisive public stand” in opposition to the legislation. It announced that it will reevaluate its advocacy strategy and halted all donations to Florida this month.

A same-sex kiss was removed from “Lightyear,” a Pixar movie. The company restored it. Although the movie clearly shows Hawthorne’s relationship with another female character, Uzo Aduba voiced it. However, the kiss was originally removed from final cuts.

Disney released Monday’s statement: “We are committed to standing up for safety and rights for LGBTQ+ members in the Disney family as well as those in the LGBTQ+ communities in Florida and throughout the country.”
