REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov(Reuters) – The Russian finance ministry announced Tuesday that it had paid the coupon for its Eurobond due 2035. This is their third payment since Western sanctions put Moscow’s ability of servicing foreign currency debt in question.
According to the ministry, $102 million was channeled by the Ministry of Finance for Eurobond coupon payments to Russia’s National Settlement Depository.
The ministry stated that the Russian finance ministry had fulfilled its obligations under the Eurobond prospectus to service sovereign securities in the Russian Federation. It did not specify whether Euroclear received the money or if it was processed to other Eurobond holders.
According to a source, however, JPMorgan Chase was the bank that processed the transaction.
According to the Eurobond prospectus settlement with investors takes place via the NSD/Euroclear and, “if the Russian Federation is not able to make payments…in U.S. dollar”, settlement could be made in Euros and pound sterling or Swiss francs.
NSD and Euroclear did not immediately respond to our request for comment.
Russia paid $117m to pay interest on two sovereign Eurobonds in March. A $66m coupon for a second issue was also due last week. Russia still has $4.4 billion of external debt redemptions to make, excluding Monday’s coupon. Some corporate borrowers also experienced payment delays.
Russia’s fourth payment, a $447million payment, is due on March 31. On April 4, Russia will make its largest payment, a $2 billion principal repayment.
