Bitcoin will soon be under fire for its environmental impact. Several climate activists groups, including Greenpeace and crypto billionaire Cris Larsen, are launching a campaign called “Change the Code, Not the Climate.”
Due to the immense energy required for cryptocurrency mining, it has been widely criticised over the years. The criticisms have caused the world’s second-largest crypto (ETH), which was originally built on the Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithm, to launch significant efforts toward transitioning to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model.
Bitcoin developers also have the ability to choose to transform the network’s PoW model into a PoS consensus.
The campaign also aimed to press the Bitcoin community into changing the order it places transactions. This already consumes as much power in Sweden as the Bitcoin community. Already, the campaign reached out to more than a dozen corporations and key individuals.
Michael Brune, who is in charge of this campaign, said that some are involved with Bitcoin and pledge Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).
Chris Larsen, co-founder of the company has donated $5 million. These funds will be used for buying ad space across major media outlets worldwide and publication will begin next month.
Larsen said:
Bitcoin is a potential competitor to Bitcoin. I would be most comfortable allowing it to continue its current course. It is not sustainable.
Other climate activists are joining the effort, as well as the publication of the ads in the media. They have started rallying their members for more intensive grassroots work.
