WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The Pentagon delayed is decision to award an enterprise wide Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability(JWCC) contract. It could be worth as much as 9 billion dollars to December, if it rescinds its April announcement.

Four companies are currently evaluating proposals: Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:), Google and Oracle Corp (NYSE:), Microsoft Corp Pentagon Chief Information Officer John Sherman spoke to reporters about Amazon (NASDAQ) Web Services and (NASDAQ) (NASDAQ) Web Services.

Sherman acknowledged that this task would take longer than anticipated and added that it would be difficult for multiple applicants to be evaluated simultaneously.

Sherman stated that up to four potential winners may be chosen, with the total value of all the contracts reaching as high as $9 billion in five years if all extensions and options are exercised.

JWCC was created to replace the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure. JEDI was an IT modernization program that built a large commercial cloud.

Trump wanted one cloud-computing service provider to the Department of Defense according to JEDI. But the Biden administration cancelled it and instead distributed the project among several companies.

This would bring the military closer to private-sector businesses, which often split their cloud computing work across multiple vendors in order to not be tied to one.
