Ronin Network Breached – Hackers Take More than $600M from Ronin Network
  • Ronin Bridge reported losses of 173,600 Ethereum and 25.5 Million USDC (roughly $650 million at the current rate).
  • Ronin said five validators’ accounts were hacked, resulting in the company increasing the number of validators from five to eight.
  • As a precautionary measure, the Ronin bridge at crypto exchange Binance was also shut down.

Ronin, an Ethereum-based sidechain that Sky Mavis created specifically for this purpose was hacked. A major security flaw led to the loss of approximately $625 million in cryptocurrency. Although the hack occurred on March 23, it was only discovered that cyber thieves were able to steal approximately $625 million worth of cryptocurrency today.

Jeff Zirlin, cofounder of Axie infinity (Jihoz), discussed hacking on stage at a keynote speech at NFT LA.

According to the blog, the Ronin Bridge’s Ronin Bridge had been emptied of 173,600ETH and 25.5million USDC on March 3. Hacker used stolen private keys to create fake withdrawals. Ronin claims that four validators for Sky Mavis and one validator for Axie DAO were compromised.

Ronin stated:

Decentralization is a key feature of the validator key scheme. However, the attacker discovered a way to bypass our gas-free RPC(NYSE:) node. This was used to obtain the signature to the Axie validator.

After the breach, both the Ronin bridge (Katana Dex) and Katana Dex have been stopped. As a precautionary measure, crypto exchange Binance also shut down its Ronin Bridge. Once it is determined that the funds can not be drained, the bridge will be restored.

Ronin will double the validation nodes’ from 5 to 8 as preventative steps. Additionally, it indicated that they are in contact with security staff at the major exchanges.
