Will Smith was asked Sunday to leave the 94th Academy Awards Ceremony after slapping presenter Chris Rock,However, it was refused according to a statement released Wednesday by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
According to the Oscars organization, Smith was referred by its board of governors for violating their standards of conduct. It will be decided at the next board meeting, April 18, what course of action, suspension, or expulsion, it will follow.
The Academy released a statement saying that Mr. Smith’s actions during the 94th Oscars was a shocking and traumatizing event. “Mr. Rock,” we apologize for what you saw on the Academy’s stage. We also thank you for your strength in those moments. Also, we apologize to all our guests, viewers and nominees for what happened during what should’ve been a celebration event.
The incident happened during the second half of the ceremony, when Rock was telling jokes just before the announcement of the winner for best document. Jada Pinkett Smith was the target of one joke, and Smith her spouse marched up on stage to slap Rock.
ABC pulled the microphones out as they started shouting at one another. However, uncensored international broadcasts picked up their yelling at one another.
People have wondered for days why Smith wasn’t removed from the ceremony following the altercation. While it’s not known how and when Smith was asked for his resignation, the Dolby Theater continued to host him. accepted the award for best actor later in the evening.
According to the Academy, it acknowledges that “we could have dealt with this situation differently.”
Smith apologized on social media Monday to Rock for his conduct. “unacceptable and inexcusable.”Prior to Sunday’s speech, the Academy had asked him for an apology.

Today, the Board of Governors initiated discipline proceedings against Mr. Smith because of violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct. This includes inappropriate physical contact and abusive or threatening behaviour. It also threatens the integrity of Academy.
As per the Academy’s Standards of Conduct and California law, Mr. Smith has been given at least 15 days notice of the vote concerning his violations and sanctions. In addition, he will have the chance to reply in writing. Any disciplinary actions, such as suspension or expulsion, may be taken by the Academy at its next meeting. This may occur on April 18.
It was extremely shocking to see Mr. Smith at the 94th Oscars. We are sorry Mr. Rock for the trauma you endured on stage. Our guests, nominees and viewers are also sincerely sorry for the events that occurred during this event.
