Oost-Nederland Police Cybercrime Investigators recovered cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as part of an investigation into widespread trading in private data.
The case was announced earlier in the month and led to two arrests: a Hilversum 19-year old man and Weesp’s 23-years-old. Two weeks ago, both of the men were taken from their residences. The police stated that this was the first arrest made by a Dutch investigation service to seize NFTs.
These NFTs cannot be replicated and are often used for digital assets that represent rights to real-world property. While they can provide a form ownership of physical property, NFTs are commonly used to protect intellectual property like digital art, video game items, movie images, and pieces of music.
According to the Police, they released this statement:
Non-fungible tokens are digital records that can be used to identify an individual on a blockchain. NFTs are particularly popular as ‘digital art’, the most famous of which are images of monkeys, cats, or punks. These photos are very rare, and in some instances, can cost millions of euro.
“Because NFTs represent value, they can be taken as the proceeds from criminal offenses, as normally happens with expensive cars or large sums of cash, as an example,” the police added.
They were identified by messages sent to a chat site. The police claim that the suspects were identified by messages sent to a chat service. They are often involved in scams such as identity fraud, bank helpdesk cons and friend-in-need schemes.
