Employers at AmazonWarehouse on Staten Island, New York were considering unionizing by Thursday afternoon.

Preliminary results from the National Labor Relations Board show that 717 votes were cast for the union side compared to 581 votes for those who voted against it. There are likely to be thousands more ballots that have not been counted and perhaps even more ballots being challenged. The union may still fall behind. About 6,000 employees work at the facility.

Amazon’s New York fulfillment center would be the nation’s first unionized facility if the current voting trends continue. JFK8 has been a campaigning effort by organizers for support. Amazon, on the other hand, has worked hard to resist the initiative, hiring staff to do so. influential consultingA polling company with strong ties to Democratic political parties.

JFK8 Employees began casting their ballots last Friday. Wednesday was the last day of voting. Friday will see the NLRB resume counting all remaining ballots.

Amazon Labor Union demanded that Amazon raise its wages. This is after the Covid-19 pandemic forced truckers and warehouse workers to work through. Amazon has recently increased its starting salary to $18 per hour and is offering benefits such as vacation time, health care and job opportunities.

The vote count on Staten Island continues, but a parallel election will be held 1,000 miles south in Bessemer. Workers there were unsuccessful in a unionization drive last year, but the  the NLRB ordered a do-over because of improper interference.

According to preliminary unofficial results, Bessemer’s vote favors the anti union side. At 39%, roughly 6,143 of eligible voters. cast their ballotsThe turnout was lower than that of 55% in spring last year.
