Greece has acquired three worldwide bailouts from the euro zone and the IMF price 280 billion euros ($307.19 billion) since 2010. It emerged from its newest bailout in 2018 and has relied on the debt markets to cowl its borrowing wants since.
“Greece concluded right now the compensation of its money owed to the IMF,” Finance Minister Christos Staikouras mentioned in an announcement.
After earlier early repayments to the IMF, Greece owed 1.9 billion euros in loans due by 2024, the final batch of a complete of 28 billion euros the Fund supplied between 2010 and 2014.
The transfer permits Athens to scale back its debt servicing prices as a result of IMF loans are dearer than its debt to EU establishments. By paying off the IMF early, Greece is saving 230 million euros, Staikouras mentioned.
