WASHINGTON (Reuters] – In an effort to reduce Moscow’s tax collections, and make it more difficult for Russia to invade Ukraine, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service has stopped information exchanges.
The IRS and Russia’s Federal Tax Service cooperated under a 30 year-old tax treaty to exchange information in order to help domestic tax collection and enforce tax laws. Russian authorities are able to provide the IRS with information on American taxpayers, and vice versa.
While the Treasury claimed that no tax data had been shared with Russian authorities after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the Treasury’s Tuesday announcement formalized the suspension.
