SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Financial services startup Ghost Financial on Tuesday announced an early round of investment as it rolls out banking-style products to the growing sector of “ghost kitchens,” restaurants dedicated to serving customers via food-delivery apps.

Ghost Capital in Austin, Texas, reported that Ghost had raised $2.5million from investors like HOF Capital. 305 Ventures. Hustle Fund. Active Capital. It provides insurance and loans to small-businesses that run ghost kitchens.

Many ghost kitchens sprung up in response to the increased demand for food delivery during the pandemic. Ghost kitchens operate independently of sit-down restaurant and are focused on delivery. Ghost Financial’s chief executive John Meyer stated that the young business owners often pay for their inventory in cash, checks, debit cards or money orders, which can slow down their growth.

“What seems to be lacking is a very clear banking and financial layer to support the … ghost kitchen industry,” said Meyer.

According to Reuters reports, large restaurant companies like Wingstop (NASDAQ) Inc have also adopted ghost kitchens in recent times, fueled by lower initial costs and higher labor costs.

Meyer noted that although food delivery has been a hugely popular option during the pandemic it is not likely to slow down. Meyer pointed out that MrBeast and other YouTube stars have started ghost-kitchens.
