BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – The European Commission proposed that big online platforms be charged a 0.1% fee to ensure they adhere to new EU rules, which require them to more effectively police content. This is according to a document from the EU.

EU legislators and EU countries are expected to reach an agreement on the Digital Services Act later in this month. This would mark the first time that an EU executive has imposed a fee to adhere to regulations.

The document was obtained by Reuters and stated that “The total amount of annual supervisory fees shall depend on the costs the Commission incurs in connection to its supervision tasks under this Regulation.”

Margrethe Vestager from the EU antitrust office told members and lawmakers last month that the annual supervisory fee could be raised between 20 and 22 million Euros ($22 million million) each year, according to Reuters.
