SAO PAULO, Reuters – An executive at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) stated Tuesday that the bank’s private sector arm is likely to continue its pace in Brazil’s environment-focused investment regardless of what happens with the October election.

Martin Spicer from IFC, the director of Latin America, and the Caribbean told Reuters that “Even though the government has not been actively supportive of the environmental agenda,” he said.

Spicer’s comments emphasize the willingness of the investment group to maintain sustainability as the main principle for its investments in the nation. This condition accounts for approximately 60% of nearly $2.8 billion annually invested by the investment group in the region.

The executive stated that IFC will continue to make investments in renewable energy projects and see opportunities to get involved in sanitation projects after the approval of a new sector framework.

IFC is also part of the World Bank Group and has discussed the possibility of investing in basic education using technology, health, particularly for emerging companies, as well as the environment agenda.

The group also signed a loan of $150 million to Santander (MC) Brasil in March to fund small-scale businesses in Brazil’s health sector.

Spicer explained that investing in venture capital was part of her business. She also stated that Latin America’s effects have created many new opportunities to help companies with high potential for growth in those areas.
