WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate backed Thursday’s legislation that would eliminate the “most favored country” status of Russia and Belarus in trade over Ukraine. This would permit higher import tariffs for the two countries.

The Senate voted to remove Permanent Normal Trade Relations status (PNTR), the latest attempt by Congress to exert economic pressure on Moscow, and its close ally Belarus.
