UN votes to remove Russia from Human Rights Council

WASHINGTON — The United Nations suspended Russia from its seat on the Human Rights Council on Thursday as the world calls out atrocities committed in Ukraine.

U.S. The proposal was made earlier this week by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Ambassador to United Nations. This follows allegations that Russian troops had tortured and murdered civilians from Ukraine in Bucha (a suburb close to Kyiv).

They were found after Moscow pulled out its troops from Bucha. The aftermath was described by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, as “genocide”. accused Russia of war crimes. The Kremlin described the military action in Ukraine previously as “special operations” but denied it targeting civilians.

Thomas-Greenfield claimed Tuesday that Russia’s inclusion on the council doesn’t help its credibility. It “undermines the whole U.N. and is plain wrong.”

The Resolution to Remove Russia From the Human Rights Council Passed with 93 Votes in Favor, 24 Against and 58 Abstentions.

The U.N. member countries that opposed the resolution included Russia, China, Iran and Syria. India abstained.

The U.N. Human Rights Council members are chosen to serve three years. They are eligible to resign after two terms.

Kyslytsya stated before the United Nations that “Bucha” and “dozens of other Ukrainian villages and cities, where thousands have been tortured, killed, raped and abducted by the Russian Army, are an example of just how far the Russian Federation has come from the initial Human Rights Domain declarations.”

He encouraged countries not to be “indifferent observers”, adding that no vote meant “pulling a trigger” or siding with Russia.

Zelenskyy demanded Tuesday that a tribunal Nuremberg-style be established to examine and prosecute Russian war crime.

“The Russian army and the people who gave orders to them must be tried immediately for their war crimes against Ukraine.” he said in his nearly 20-minute speechBefore the United Nations Security Council.

After claims by Ukraine that 300 civilians had been tortured and murdered in Bucha, Zelenskyy appeared before the international organization.

This weekend saw a renewed outrage worldwide over the Russian invasion horrific images emerged of bodies scattered across the streets, some with their hands tied and gunshot wounds to the back of the head.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced Tuesday that NATO is working together with the U.N. International Criminal Court in an investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

The war crime of targeting and killing civilians is to be considered as a war crime. Tuesay said that all the facts need to be proven and that those who committed these atrocities should be held accountable.

Stoltenberg gave a briefing to reporters at NATO’s headquarters prior to a two day meeting of foreign ministers. She stated that there was reliable evidence from the alliance of war crimes being committed in Bucha as well as other Ukrainian cities.
