Will Smith banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years after slapping Chris Rock on stage

Will Smith will be banned from attending Academy Awards events for the next decade, after being slapped by Chris Rock last month.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Dawn Hudson and President David Rubin announced Friday that Smith’s behavior during the 94th Annual Oscars Ceremony meant that Smith would no longer be permitted to attend events and programs held by the Academy for the next 10 years.

Hudson and Rubin sent a joint letter to Academy members, which was obtained by NBC News. They stated that “this action we’re taking today to respond to Will Smith’s behaviour is a step towards a bigger goal of protecting our performers and guests and restoring trust within the Academy.”

Although the 94th Oscars was meant to celebrate the achievements of many people in the community, they were overshadowed and distorted by Mr. Smith’s unacceptable and dangerous behavior on the stage.

Our telecast did not properly address the issue in the room. We are sorry for this. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.

Today’s Board of Governors meeting was to address Will Smith’s decision to resign at the Oscars. For a 10-year period, starting April 8th 2022, the Board of Governors has decided that Mr. Smith will not be allowed to attend Academy programs or events, either in person or virtual, except for the Academy Awards.

We are grateful to Mr. Rock, for his ability to keep his cool in the face of extraordinary situations. Our telecast was also a success because of the graciousness and poise displayed by our presenters, hosts and nominees.

Today’s action is taken in response and respect to Will Smith. This will help us achieve our larger goals of safety for performers and guests as well as rebuilding trust in the Academy. This can also be a step towards healing and restoration for everyone involved.

This story is breaking. Keep checking back for more updates.
