REUTERS/Athit PerawongmethaBERLIN, (Reuters) – Mercedes-Benz aims for a halving of its CO2 emissions in 2030. The carmaker stated Monday that this is half the way to its current goal to become CO2 neutral by 2039.
It stated that the company would also aim to cover 70% of its energy production from renewable energy by 2030. This is an increase of 45-50% currently.
Production chief Joerg Buzer stated that around 15% should be generated by solar or wind power on Mercedes-Benz’s own site.
Power Purchase Agreements, or PPAs for short, will provide the rest. These agreements allow power producers to be paid to produce a specified amount of energy over a given period of time and at a predetermined price.
Burzer said that the carmaker has been in discussions with PPAs to buy additional wind energy worth one billion euros ($1.09billion) by 2025.
Mercedes-Benz relies for now on gas as its back-up source of supply. Burzer explained that gas is still needed. We are working to reduce that.”
