(Reuters.) Three video clips were released by Grand Rapids Police on Wednesday. They show a Black police officer killing a Black male after a traffic stop.
Patrick Lyoya (26), was killed on April 4, causing outrage among his family members and prompting protests in Grand Rapids, Michigan by activists who believe it to be the latest act of police violence against Black youth.
Grand Rapids Police officers have put the officer (who has not been identified publicly) on administrative leave. The Michigan State Police have been asked to look into the shooting.
On Wednesday, Kent County Prosecutors told CNN that they would make a determination on criminal charges after the investigation was complete.
In a written response to the video, the NAACP stated that another Black man had died due to police brutality and called for the arrest of the officer responsible.
President Biden, please sign the executive order on police reform. The NAACP stated that while we understand an executive order cannot replace meaningful legislation, it is important to do all we can to protect our community.”
On Wednesday, police released video footage from the officers’ squad car dashboard and his body-worn camera. A neighbor also recorded the videos.
Lyoya is seen stepping out from the car and walking on a wet street. She seems confused, asking “what’s my plan?” The policeman asks Lyoya repeatedly for her driver’s license, and then tells him to go back in the car.
Lyoya looks to be compliant, but then closes off the driver-side doors and attempts to run away. The officers attempt to handcuff Lyoya, but he resists.
The two men engage in a quick foot chase. Lyoya then is killed.
After Lyoya was stopped by the officer for suspicions regarding his license plate, the incident started.
