TOKYO, Reuters – On Friday the dollar rose to a record high against the yen of two decades and remained close to a 2-year high against the euro. This was due to more hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve officials that reinforced the expectation for a faster U.S. policy tightening.

In a client note, Tim Riddell of Westpac, wrote that William spoke out about the need for rates to be moved faster and more quickly than neutral. This further buoyed the dollar.

The U.S. Treasury yields increased overnight after a decline of two days. This buoyed the greenback further. Friday was Good Friday, which saw Treasuries not trading in Tokyo due to the U.K., Hong Hong, and Australia markets holiday. [US/]

In a note, Goldman Sachs analysts (NYSE:) wrote that “despite repeated verbal interventions over the last few weeks by Japanese policymakers has continued to rise alongside lower U.S yields.”
According to them, “The chances of FX interventions are increasing” and will “should rise substantially once USD/JPY moves into the 127–130 range.”

“If the price drops below $38,000 it can get very ugly.”
