REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/PoolKHARTOUM (Reuters – Sudanese military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan made comments Friday in support of steps taken to alleviate tensions within the country, six months after a military coup.
“We’re entering a very difficult time and all of us must make concessions for our country,” he stated, referring to the country’s deteriorating security and economic situation at Ramadan.
He said, “We are ready to do what we can in order to foster a dialogue that leads us to solutions.”
Together with other military leaders, he staged an uprising on October 25 to end a 2-year-old power-sharing agreement with a civil political coalition after the ouster Omar al-Bashir.
At least 94 protesters have been killed and many others have been detained since then.
Burhan claimed that although there weren’t any “political prisoners”, he had met with both the head of judiciary and public prosecutor in order to expedite the release detainees. Among them are important civilian politicians.
He said that they had also discussed the possibility to reduce the emergency state.
These steps are often required by international communities as trust-building actions.
Burhan claimed that the steps were made in response to concessions made towards an agreement by political groups.
Reuters reported earlier in the month that parties aligned to the military were considering a deal for forming a new government.
Burhan stated previously that the military will only give power to an elected government. Burhan called on Friday for all political parties to reach a common understanding in his comments.
Burhan commented that no single group should control the political scene, which is a departure from the past. Military leaders have accused civilians of dominating power in comments made before and after the coup.
Burhan said also that the court orders that lead to the return of many civil servants involved in the Bashir regime’s activities would be reviewed.
