FUENTES D ANDALUCIA Spain (Reuters) – A quiet village with white walls in south Spain changed its name from Ukraine to show solidarity for those who were killed in conflict over 4,000 km (2500 miles).
A sign at the village entrance indicates that Ukraine has taken over Fuentes de Andalucia. The country’s flag and blue have been added to the side.
In the eastern village of Seville, more than 7,100 people have renamed streets as City of Kyiv and Odesa.
Francisco Martinez, a City of Kiev resident said that the main goal was to increase awareness of the conflict in Ukraine and other countries at war.
Martinez explained that Martinez’s name change was more then a gesture. In two days, villagers raised 3,500 Euros ($3,780), which they used to pay towards the planned refugee centre. It is aiming to house up to 25 refugees in the center or their families.
Rafael Osuna, aged 68, is a pensioner who said that he would accept a Ukrainian couple to his house.
Fuentes is proud of us,” he stated. “As I am single and own a large house, I thought about taking in a couple from Ukraine for a time.”
