Dolly Parton is one of the hardest-working people in Hollywood — and at 76, the legendary country artist doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. 

Tennessee native, Miranda Patterson, has released “Run, Rose, Run”, her debut novel. The companion album is also available. Run, Rose, Run follows the rise of a Nashville singer-songwriter.

Parton talked about her achievements, regrets, and ways she manages burnout last week in an interview with Adam Grant (organizational psychologist). “WorkLife with Adam Grant.”

Throughout her 50-year career, there’s one piece of bad advice people have tried to pass on to Parton – but she’s always brushed it off. 

“The main advice that people wanted to give me was to change my look – to go simpler with my hair and the way that I dress, not to look so cheap, nobody was ever going to take me seriously they would say,” she told Grant.  

She said, “The way that I look now and how I used to look back then is a country girl’s idea if glam. Just like the song in ‘Backwoods Barbie. That was exactly the kind of look I desired. I didn’t have natural beauty. I like the way that I look. Because I am so outgoing, the way that I look should reflect all of my personality. 

Parton shared her secrets for managing multiple projects simultaneously without getting burnt out. 

She was nominated 50 times for Grammys, received four Emmy Award nominations, one Tony Award nomination and sold more than 100,000,000 albums. Parton laughed, saying that she had “so many irons in my fire that sometimes it’s burning my butt.” Parton joked that she had to rise earlier and work harder, while also having to be more ambitious in the morning, referring to the first line of the hit “9 to 5”. 

Her continued, “I have no time for burnout. I’m a creative person and every new thing will create something else … energy begets energy and creativity begets creativity, so I just really have to stay with it because I want to see things happen, I want to make things happen.”

Parton, after a hard day at work said that she prefers to relax with Carl Thomas Dean in their home and read or cook. Parton turns to God for comfort. 

Parton’s other secret to success is simple: Don’t take yourself too seriously – and that includes not dwelling on past mistakes. Parton stated that she enjoys her work and wants it to be enjoyable. She also said that it should be fun for the people around her to do it. “My greatest regret is not having any regrets.”
