Binance Announces Chagri Payraz, former Head of Anti–Money Laundering and Sanctions Compliance for Coupang, as Global Head Of Sanctions

Binance, the global blockchain ecosystem behind the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, today announced that its Director of Sanctions Compliance Chagri Poyraz has been promoted to Global Head of Sanctions since joining in early January. As the current Director of Sanctions Compliance, Chagri Poyraz is responsible for Binance’s compliance with all sanctions globally. He also helps to build robust sanction control systems similar to traditional banks.

Poyraz is a veteran in the areas of compliance, strategy management, intergovernmental liaison, and risk management. It includes the design of advanced techniques and programs that prevent, detect, and report on money laundering attempts, as well as sanctions evasion.

Before Binance, Poyraz led the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Sanctions programs at South Korea’s largest online marketplace Coupang, as well as third-party risk management, onboarding, know your customer (KYC), customer due diligence (CDD), enhanced due diligence (EDD), third party screening and sanctions compliance. He also built their financial crime compliance program, and developed the necessary risk controls for the company’s listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Poyraz at HSBC was responsible to maintain its sanctions program, adhere and observe sanctions imposed United States, Canada, United Kingdom and United States. He also acted as the risk steward. Poyraz’s responsibilities included enterprise-wide risk assessments, regulatory engagement, and supervision of the execution of a deferred prosecutor agreement.

As the global compliance group continues to expand its leadership, and to improve responsiveness in dynamically evolving and changing regulatory environments, He plans to bring his previous experiences at financial institutions into this industry.

Poyraz began his career as a diplomat in Brussels, advocating for human rights and global security. He worked with several European Parliament committees. His role as a UN Economic and Social Council Permanent Representative in Geneva was to publish resolutions and reports, focusing on conflict resolution.

Poyraz belongs to the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists as well the Association of Certified Sanctions Specialists. Poyraz holds a B.A. He holds a B.A. in Global Studies from Vancouver Island University, British Columbia, Canada.
