REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesANKARA (Reuters), – Turkish President Tayyip Erdoan said Sunday that he told Mahmoud Basah, the Palestinian counterpart, that he regretted Israeli actions against worshippers in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque. He also pledged to oppose any attempts to alter its status.
Erdogan’s remarks come amid Turkey and Israel’s efforts to normalize relations following years of animosity about a variety of issues including the Israeli-Palestinian war and Turkey’s support of Hamas, the militant group that runs Gaza.
Clashes with Israeli riot officers at Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Friday left at least 152 Palestinians injured. This latest flare-up in violence has raised concerns about a resurgence of conflict.
