MEXICO CITY (Reuters] -Mexican President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador criticized Texas over the increased inspections of commercial trucks that it imposed earlier this month. The move disrupted commerce at the Mexico-U.S. frontier.

Lopez Obrador told a news conference that although they legally can accomplish it, it is a very shameful act.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is a Republican. Greg Abbott described increased truck inspections in Texas as part of larger efforts to prevent illegal immigration.

Lopez Obrador stated that Abbott tried to win support from voters.

Abbott has entered the race for November’s third four-year term.

Abbott’s office didn’t immediately reply to my request for comment.

Traffic was backed up by the inspections, which sparked protests from Mexican truckers. Business groups were pressured to take action after traffic jams resulted in millions of dollars worth losses.

The White House criticised the intensified inspections last week and stated they were unnecessary. They also claimed that they disrupted automobile and food supply chains, driving up inflation and pushing prices higher.

According to reports by the governor, Abbott also chartered buses for immigrants to be transported from Texas to Washington.

Texas said Friday it would stop the inspections, following agreements with Texas’ four Mexican neighboring states. The deals stipulated that Texas would intensify security measures to counter illegal immigration along its border and reduce drug smuggling.
