CNBC was told Tuesday by the leader of an airline attendants union that she encouraged passengers on planes to use a mask if they feel sick.

These comments were made one day after an American federal judge demolished the Covid mandate that requires public transport, including planes to cover their faces. According to the Transportation Security Administration, it won’t enforce the Pandemic Policy, while major U.S. airlines stated that they would no longer require masks.

Interview on “Squawk Box,”Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants CWA, said that she agreed with Andrew Ross Sorkin who stated that he believes, regardless of federal regulations, everyone should wear a mask when riding public transport if they are suffering from Covid or another illness.

“I’m sure there is something we can learn from this.” [pandemic]Nelson stated that it must be about common courtesy, but noted that the union has taken a neutral stance on the question of whether or not the mask mandate should stay because its members were divided. It represents almost 50,000 flight attendants working at 17 airlines. according to its website.

Nelson claimed that the flight crew had masks available even before Covid and would ask passengers to use them if they were having trouble with their cough. This isn’t about expanding the mask policy. “This is about being able to recognize that each of us are responsible for looking after others and not trying to bring our own viruses or problems onto other people.

Prior to Monday’s court verdict, the nationwide face-covering requirements were supposed to remain in force through May 3. Since last year, the Biden administration has extended it multiple times. including just last week.

However, the Justice Department is yet to say whether they will appeal Kathryn Kimball Mizelle’s ruling. She was appointed by the former President Donald Trump2020

Nelson stated that there was a “sigh of relief” from the flight crews. “But there’s also people who are really concerned — people who are immunocompromised, people who are taking care of kids who are under the age of 5 at home and haven’t had access to the vaccine yet.”

The issue of masks on planes has become contentious, leading to a rise in disruptive passengers. Last year, there were a lot of incidents involving passengers who did not wear masks. more than 70% of the nearly 6,000 reports of unruly passenger behaviorFederal Aviation Administration. Flight attendants had expressed serious concernsConcerned about their safety while trying to enforce the rule.

While Mizelle’s rule remains in force, it’s not clear how flight crew and passengers will handle masks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to advise people to wear masks in the event of a pandemic.

CNBC’s Sorkin wanted to understand how people think about this issue through a twitter poll. In Sorkin’s poll, 7,200 people responded to the unscientific question. The overwhelming majority said that they will wear a face mask even if they’re knowingly sick.

Nelson regretted that passengers who are aware they are sick wouldn’t take extra precautions like wearing masks on planes.

I’m a 25 year old flight attendant. “Every flight attendant understands that you must get your wings under you when you first start flying. This will ensure you get all the viruses out and an amazing immune system,” Nelson stated.

Her comments were scathing. That’s where I work. This is a risky move. If you do it, you are increasing the likelihood that you will spread germs to me. This is just common good manners.
