(Reuters) – More than a quarter million Northeast United States homes and businesses were left without power Tuesday following a strong spring storm that brought heavy snow and winds to the area.

After producing between 6 and 12 inches (25-30 cm) of snow, and wind speeds of over 50 miles an hour during the night, the National Weather Service said that the storm would likely dump more snow in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and New York.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 190,000 homes and businesses had been left without electricity in New York State. Another 47,000 were affected in Pennsylvania by the storm. Poweroutage.us also reported that 32,000 customers of power companies in Maine and Vermont still had no electricity.

National Grid New York’s power company, LON (Long Island Power Company), stated in a statement that they were out to assess and repair the damage.

According to the report, “Continuing heavy, wet, snow and strong winds have caused significant and widespread damage throughout parts of Central and Eastern New York.”

New video and photographic footage were shown at new outlets throughout the region. They included photos and videos of power lines and snow covered trees falling onto sidewalks and roadways. In a tweet, the department of transportation stated that roads were also closed in many communities throughout central and upstate New York because trees and power lines had fallen.

According to NWS, snow accumulations will not last long as temperatures rise to 50 degrees on Wednesday and Friday and reach the 60s this week.
