WASHINGTON (Reuters] – 21 U.S. senators sent a Wednesday letter to Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg (NASDAQ:), expressing concern at what they described as disinformation posted on Facebook. The platform was targeted at Spanish speakers and aimed specifically at Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow-backed media outlets, such as RT en Espanol or RT en Espanol spread the misinformation. Senator Amy Klobuchar and Ben Ray Lujan joined with Representative Tony Cardenas along with 18 others to sign the letter.

The lawmakers stated that Facebook has repeatedly failed to demonstrate it was adequately solving the problem of Spanish-speaking communities. They also pointed out the successes of Russian sponsored outlets, which have crowded out the information environment for Spanish speakers.

The letter stated that “the viral spread of these stories stands in stark contradiction to Meta’s assurances to Members of Congress and the public that it prioritizes the urgent needs of Hispanic community in the United States.”

Facebook now known as Meta Platforms stated in a statement it was working in Spanish to end disinformation.

We are working with third party fact-checkers to discredit false claims and remove content that is related to the conflict in Ukraine. Kevin McAlister said that when they identify something false, it is moved lower in feed to ensure that less people see it.” He also stated that McAlister was “applying labels” to state-controlled media publications, such as those cited in McAlister’s letter.

It was signed by 14 senators as well as seven representatives. Most of the members were representing states such California or New York that have significant Spanish-speaking population.
