REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo(Reuters) – Billionaire activist Carl Icahn stated on Thursday that he has no interest in a bid to buy Southwest Gas (NYSE) Holdings Inc. This comes days after Southwest Gas said it would review a potential sale due to interest from an unknown buyer.
Icahn wrote to shareholders of Southwest stating that his only interest was to replace the current board.
Icahn indicated that, if Icahn’s nominees for director are elected, they will continue to pursue strategic options for Southwest. However, he said that he wouldn’t consider bidding on the utility.
The anonymous Southwest buyer, which was disclosed earlier in this week by a billionaire, also raised questions about the legitimacy of Southwest’s acquisition offer.
Icahn tried to take control of Southwest Gas’ board and replace its chief operating officer. The company had adopted a shareholder rights strategy to stop him from trying to force it to abandon the Questar Pipelines $2B acquisition.
Later, the billionaire launched an offer to purchase shares of Southwest from shareholders at $82.50 per share. Icahn’s March bid was rejected by Southwest.
The Thursday letter did not mention Icahn’s offer.
