(Reuters] – A group of thirteen victims of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse are suing the FBI for $130 million. They claim that the FBI failed to investigate the allegations against the ex-USA Gymnastics doctor.
According to the individuals, they have suffered more abuse due to the FBI not properly investigating Nassar following being informed of certain allegations against him. Each person is now submitting an administrative tort case.
An immediate response was not received from the FBI to our request for comment.
“This is the largest failure on the part of law enforcement in the history of the world as it pertains to the protection of children, and there must be institutional accountability to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” attorney Jamie White said in a written statement.
In July, the U.S. Justice Department’s Internal Watchdog stated that Nassar was unable to probe sexual abuse claims against him. He was sentenced to up to 175 year imprisonment for abusing his young gymnasts.
Two FBI agents were also charged with lying in order to conceal “numerous fundamental errors” that enabled Nassar to abuse his position.
McKayla Maroney told the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, September, that she had spent three hours talking to the FBI about her story in 2015. The FBI didn’t document the conversation for a year, and that her statements were misrepresented by the FBI.
The attorneys representing the individuals stated that tort claims may be precursors to civil litigation and that the FBI will have six months to reply.
Grace French (a Nassar survivor, founder of The Army of Survivors) stated in a written statement that “Noone should have been attacked after the summer of 2015.”
“To think that the FBI could’ve helped me to avoid this trauma is disgusting,” she stated.
