(Reuters) – Philadelphia has rescinded its mandate for indoor masks, officials from the health department said on Thursday. This was just days after it had been imposed.
On Thursday, the Board of Health (BOH), voted to repeal the mandate. The Philadelphia Health Department stated that the vote was carried.
A spokesperson for the department said that “Due to declining hospitalizations, and a leveling off case counts,” masks will be strongly recommended in indoor public places. This was in contrast to mandating them. According to the latest data, “The BOH decided to cancel the mandate.”
On Monday, Philadelphia reinstated the mask mandate for indoor public spaces such as schools, restaurants and businesses. This was in response to what seemed to be an outbreak of coronavirus transmissions.
Philadelphia became the first American major city to adopt such a mandate.
The mandate was relaxed by the 1.5 million-strong city in March, following a decrease in Omicron variant cases.
Many states and municipalities in the United States have relaxed their requirements for vaccination and masks.
The city’s health division reported that 5,025 Philadelphians were killed by COVID-19. More than 280,000 people have been confirmed with the coronavirus virus since the pandemic started.
A Reuters count shows that approximately 990,000.0 lives were lost in America since the coronavirus epidemic began in early 2020.
