BERLIN (Reuters). Europe’s automakers must stop using fossil fuels by 2040. Chief executive of Volkswagen (ETR) said Friday that Audi was calling for a faster expansion of renewable energy in Bavaria (where Audi is based) and other areas.

Talks about an embargo on Russian Gas in the wake of Moscow’s Invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns that companies and governments will not invest in renewable energy. Mercedes-Benz promised new investments into wind and solar, to support its plants.

Markus Duessmann stated at a conference, “Let’s be brave as Europeans” and declare that we must abandon all fossil fuels by 2040. For individual mobility, we must focus all our efforts on battery-electric vehicles.

Audi will cease selling combustion engine vehicles in 2033. According to the company, its parent Volkswagen will cease selling combustion engine cars in Europe by 2035 and then in China and the United States later.

BMW and other automakers have cautioned against over-focusing on electric cars too quickly, as there is still a high demand for combustion engines.

Germany’s coalition government said that its goal is to phase out coal in 2030. It also aims at supplying all of Germany with electricity from renewable sources by 2035.
