SHANGHAI (Reuters – Shanghai, a major financial centre in China reported 12 COVID-19 deaths today. That’s an increase from 11 on the previous day. The frustrations of residents continued to simmer amid a tight lockdown and strong online censorship.

China’s largest coronavirus pandemic, the city of Beijing, which was battling it, reported 20,634 local asymptomatic infection cases on Friday. This is a rebound from 15,698 one day prior. The number of new symptoms increased to 2,736, an increase from the 1,931 recorded on April 21st, according to official data.

Shanghai’s government stated that the average age of those who died was 88. The Shanghai government stated that all the victims had serious health issues and had not been immunized.

Jaya Dantas from the Curtin School of Population Health, Australia is currently monitoring the Shanghai virus outbreak. She stated that “one strategy that must be implemented immediately is to increase the rate of booster vaccinations to the elderly, and other vulnerable group, and to see whether mRNA vaccines are possible.”

China is yet to develop its own mRNA vaccines and it has elected to not import any from overseas.

China’s Disease Prevention and Control Center released a Friday study that found medical experts from Jilin in northeast China, where there was a recent epidemic. They said China has been able to develop new COVID-19 vaccines, but they have not yet proven effective.

According to them, the “data is sufficient to show the public relevance of the strategy for full and booster vaccines, particularly for seniors.”

PRESSURES MOUNTING

Although frustrations remained high in Shanghai’s residential compound, authorities maintain that they will not relax until any new cases beyond the quarantine area are resolved.

Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng stated that the “more critical the period gets, the greater we need to grind our teeth and focus on our strength,” Shanghai’s WeChat channel reported late Friday.

On Friday, 218 cases were outside of quarantine zones. This is down from 250 on the previous day.

Shanghai’s complete-city lockdown was initiated at the beginning April. But many Shanghai residents remain in their homes longer.

However, after being shut down for 30 days or more, some compounds still report new cases. It casts doubt upon China’s efficacy.

Dantas stated that “this is a substantial amount of time, and can have mental health effects: people feel exhausted and frustrated.”

Social media saw netizens fight against censors over night to share the six-minute video “The Voice of April”, an amalgamation of voices captured during the Shanghai epidemic.

Pan across Shanghai’s silent skyscrapers. The footage features residents complaining about food shortages and medical problems, along with the heavy handed tactics employed by the city authorities.

Saturday morning saw the removal of all film-related references from Weibo (NASDAQ) microblogging services. Some comments, however, were still available criticising the censorship.

He said that “if you aren’t willing to hear even a fraction of genuine voices it is hopeless.”
