SOUTHEASTERN POLAND – Washington’s highest diplomat and defense secretary visited Kyiv Sunday. Officials said that the visit was the first U.S. official U.S. presence in Ukraine since Russia invaded it two months ago. It also announced a gradual return to U.S. diplomatics and the appointment of a new Ambassador.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Poland Saturday, then crossed into Ukraine Sunday. There, President Volodomyr Zeleskiy met them. A senior State Department official stated that they were not able to talk about details of their travels or security arrangements.

It was meant to support Ukraine with Western assistance. Cabinet secretaries promised new $713 million aid for Zelenskiy’s administration and for countries within the region. Russia’s recent invasion raised concerns about further Russian aggression.

It also highlighted the shift in the conflict since Ukrainian forces, armed with a massive influx of weapons from the West, successfully repelled a Russian assault on Kyiv.

Russian forces are now trying to capture additional territory in the Donbas region’s southeast. Foreign leaders can visit Washington, and other nations may resume diplomatic presence. However, Washington is cautious due to occasional Russian missile strikes in the west.

Security concerns prompted officials to decline requests by the media not to travel with the secretaries in Ukraine. According to Polish authorities, the officials informed reporters that they would only report the visit if the Ukrainian delegation is safely home.

Austin will continue his journey to Germany where he will meet with counterparts from over 20 countries and NATO Secretary General Jens Steltenberg at U.S. Air Base at Ramstein in order to discuss Ukraine’s defense requirements, according to a Pentagon official.

Zelenskiy made the announcement during a press conference that took place on Saturday. Officials from the United States said it was an emergency they planned and didn’t derail their visit.

Blinken was expected to meet Austin for around 90 minutes, along with Zelenskiy (Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Koleba), Defence Minister Oleksii Rynikov, and other officials.

Nearly two weeks ago, U.S. diplomats evacuated the Kyiv embassies. Some functions were moved to Lviv in the west before being relocated to Poland.

The State Department said that diplomats will begin “day trips across the border” to Lviv this week. Officials are also planning to accelerate their return to Kyiv.

According to the Polish official who spoke under anonymity and briefed journalists in Poland, “There is no substitute for the face-to–face engagement.”

Officials also stated that President Joe Biden would officially nominate Bridget Brink as U.S. envoy to Ukraine. The post was vacant for two years.

BATTLE FOR THE DONNBAS

Zelenskiy received information from Austin and Blinken about more than $322,000,000 in foreign military financing. That brings the U.S.’s total assistance to Ukraine after the invasion to approximately $3.7 billion.

According to the official, “It will support capabilities Ukraine needs,” especially in fighting the Donbas. “This aid will also assist Ukraine’s military transition to better weapons and air defence systems. They are basically NATO capable.”

According to the official, nearly $400 million worth of new financing for foreign military purposes will also be provided to fifteen other countries in Central- and Eastern Europe as well as the Balkans.

According to John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, the Pentagon sent more than 50 Ukrainians to Ukraine to train on Monday in Howitzer heavy guns. Washington started sending them to Ukraine recently to indicate that fighting in Ukraine is now centered in the Donbas, he told reporters.

The official stated that Blinken had spoken with Antonio Guterres, U.N. Secretary General, on Friday in order to coordinate the U.N. chiefs’ visits to Moscow, Kyiv and Kyiv.
