AmazonWorkers are voting Monday in another union drive on Staten Island.

Nearly 1 500 workers from the LDJ5 warehouse can vote. The election takes place in a big, white tent just outside the building. The voting began Monday morning, and will continue through Friday. On May 2, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will start counting votes.

Just across the street is another Amazon warehouse known as JFK8, which, surprise, will be holding the election. voted in the company’s first U.S. unionLess than a month. Unlike JFK8, a huge warehouse covering 855,000 square feet with approximately 6,000 workers, LDJ5 has a smaller facility that allows employees to sort and deliver packages.

After its historic win at JFK8, the Amazon Labor Union is working to unify a second Amazon warehouse. ALU is calling forAmazon plans to raise hourly wages to minimum $30/hour for all workers. Amazon reports that the average hourly start pay in fulfillment centers across America is $18 per hour. The union also wants longer hours and better benefits.

CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin heard last week from Andy Jassy CEO of Amazon that the company believes employees are better off not being part of a union.

Jassy explained that Amazon is empowering employees. “If they see something they could do better for customers and themselves, they can meet in a conference room to decide what they should do. Unions don’t allow for this type of empowerment. It takes much longer and is more bureaucratic.

Amazon is seeking to overturnJFK8 election results, arguing in a filing to the NLRB federal labor agency and union acted in a manner that tainted those results. Amazon’s accusations were “patently absurd,” according to an ALU attorney.

In recent weeks, Amazon’s unionization efforts have been supported by high profile figures. President Joe Biden supported unionizing Amazon employees earlier this month. “Amazon, here we come.”

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), joined ALU on Sunday at a rally in front of LDJ5. In remarks made at the rally Sanders attacked Jeff Bezos founder of Amazon, who is the second most wealthy man in the country.

Sanders spoke to the crowd and said, Jeff Bezos owns a 500 million dollar yacht. Jeff, Jeff, you should think of the Staten Island workers as well as your staff all across the country when you go out on your boat. A $500 million yacht is not what they want. The $23 million Washington D.C. mansion they are interested in is not what they want. Affordable housing is what they want. They would like to save a little money to pay for college. They do not want to be exploited, and they don’t want this huge turnover here due to the terrible working conditions.
