(Reuters) –Lael Brainard is expected to take over as the next U.S. central banking vice chair on Tuesday. Three other nominees are also likely to be voted upon later in the week.
On Tuesday, the Senate will hold its final confirmation vote (1815 GMT) for Brainard. He is currently the Fed Governor. To close the debate about Brainard’s nominating, eight Republicans voted 54-40 Monday.
A confirmation vote was expected to be held by the Senate for Lisa Cook, a Michigan State University nominee. On Tuesday, Democrats expected to move to limit floor debate. Republicans were not likely to agree.
This week, the Senate will also schedule confirmation votes for Fed Chair Jerome Powell (renominated to current position) and Philip Jefferson (Davidson College dean, faculty), who were nominated to a vacant spot on the Board. They are both expected to receive bipartisan support.
The Fed will likely announce a half-point interest rate increase and a decrease in its massive balance sheet at its next policy meeting. This is as part of its ongoing fight against inflation, which has been high for 40 years.
Cook and Jefferson will likely be joined by Jefferson after the meeting. They would take part in discussions over interest-rate increases that are anticipated at all future Fed meetings this year, and at least into next year.
Cook, the first Black woman on the Fed Board currently composed entirely of white men and Jefferson the fourth Black man who has served in its more than 100 year history.
