LOS ANGELES (Reuters), – Courtney B. Vance, an Emmy- and Tony-winning actor plays Franklin Roberts, a dedicated lawyer who is determined to win a case that can shake the criminal justice systems.

Roberts plays the role of Moses Johnson (played in Tosin Colley in Britain), who is a promising Black track runner at Chicago’s high schools and who will go on to college. Johnson wrongly accused of killing a police officer. This sets the stage for more plot twists and a deeper discussion about systemic problems in marginalized communities, such as their relationship to the police, drug wars, prison conditions, and access to resources.

Vance stated, “I believe everyone could put themselves in that position and go what would happen if there wasn’t anyone to help?” It could be the prison system. The judicial system could also be involved. You can be accused if they get you in. They will then turn their backs on you.

Cole stated, “You can see the effect of certain things on a person’s family. How that one error or being at the wrong place at wrong times has on their family or on the police force and the system.”

In Chicago, Peter Moffat, Alana Mayo, J. David Shanks, and Michael B. Jordan were the executive producers. They sought input from South Side residents and community advocates, as well as police officers, to ensure that the series accurately depicted South Side’s vibrancy and struggles.

Shanks was a South Side Chicagoan and former cop.

Some messages from “61st Street”, however, can be translated across the world.

Cole, who is from London, stated that these things happen. People feel inequity and feel that classism still exists. Clearly, there are also a lot of Black residents. We may also feel whatever you are feeling.
