Snowden Revealed He’s Behind Zcash Privacy Coin. What’s the point?

Edward Snowden is a scandalous whistleblower responsible for the massive US intelligence leak. Edward Snowden made yet another disclosure to the world, revealing that he was one of six co-founders the Zcash privacy currency.

In 2013, the former computer intelligence consultant Leaked classified information from National Security Agency before fleeing Russia. Russia granted him permanent asylum.

The Ceremony: Part I

Edward Snowden was confirmed today to have been behind John Dobbertin (one of the original Zcash privacy currency creators).

The group of individuals, who calls itself “Ceremony”, formed back in 2016 to create the first units of privacy-preserving digital currency.

Snowden named the team of “trusted academic cryptographers” as one of the reasons to join the Zcash’s inner rings. He also explained why privacy coins are essential for a free society.

“When we look in cryptocurrencies in general, we generally see cryptographic properties of it being used to make sure it’s fair ledger, but not that it’s been used to ensure that it’s a private ledger.

A public ledger, as it is known, is very useful. The problem with that is you can’t have truly free trade unless you have private trade, and you can’t have a free society without free trade,” Snowden stated.

He hasn’t revealed the identity of his former intelligence consultant. While he stated that the algorithm was not his design work, he vaguely suggested that a greater intelligence-related skill set might be available to him.

“When they [Ceremony] came to this concept that they needed many people in many places all cooperating in the hopes that just one of them might not be compromised, might not work sort of against public interest… I was happy to say “Sure, I’ll help” Snowden shared in a video produced by a Zcash-related media house.

Suspected of Sanctions Evasion

Zcash (ZCASH), a privacy-preserving crypto that was originally launched as a code derivative from Bitcoin in 2016, allows users to make encrypted transactions. The Zcash (ZCASH) privacy-preserving coin uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide financial information from the public.

With a $2.1 billion market cap, Zcash is today one of the crypto markets’ leading privacy coins. Zcash recorded significant 114% growth during the first month since Russia invaded Ukraine and global allies punished Putin’s regime with unprecedented economic sanctions.

The popularity of privacy coins has been long suspected to be a payment option for black markets and regimes as well as shady financial agents.

Why not now?

Six years after Edward Snowden’s death, the secret that Edward Snowden is John Dobbertin was finally revealed. Given the rarity of cryptocurrency founders being subject to a limitation period, one question arises naturally: “Why now?”

Snowden’s video, which was purely educational, seems to have the answer. The one that was produced and published on the newly launched Zcash Media’s Youtube channel.

Newly established production house focuses on creating educational content in documentary style for Zcash and other related technologies.

The flip side:

  • Edward Snowden has faced charges of violating the United States Espionage Act and revealing state secrets, which included details on the US government’s surveillance program.
  • Snowden had active contact with Russian intelligence services three years ago, after having been granted asylum in Russia. This fact was made public by the Ceremony members in the year that Snowden was invited to the Zcash team.
