WASHINGTON (Reuters). Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE: ) has rejected Friday’s allegations by California’s attorney general office regarding the company’s role in the creation of the plastic waste crisis.

California’s attorney General Rob Bonta announced that he will issue Exxon a subpoena for information on Thursday. This is part of an broader probe into how the fossil fuel- and petrochemical industry’s involvement in the “cause and aggravation” of the plastics pollution crisis.

Exxon claimed it is committed to improving waste management. It also deploys advanced recycling technology on a large scale at major petrochemical facilities. According to Exxon, this technology can convert a wide range of plastics into raw materials that can then be used to create new plastic.

In a written statement, a spokesperson said that “we are focused upon solutions” and did not make any meritless accusations.

This investigation will be similar to those launched by several state attorney generals into the role of fossil fuel companies. They focused on the past and the lies that companies told the public.

“For more than half a century, the plastics industry has engaged in an aggressive campaign to deceive the public, perpetuating a myth that recycling can solve the plastics crisis. The truth is: The vast majority of plastic cannot be recycled,” Bonta said in a statement.

A landmark Science Advances study found that more than 90% global plastic waste ends up in landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), US recycling has not been greater than 9%.

It is becoming more common to curb plastic production to combat plastic waste. In February, the UN presented the blueprint for a treaty in which production restrictions could be included.
