On June 7, the FDA will be reviewing Novavax’s adult vaccine, for people 18 years and older. The FDA has selected three possible dates – June 8, 21 and 22 – to discuss Moderna and Pfizer’s shots for children under age 5 who are not yet eligible for vaccination. The FDA released a statement Friday saying that dates were not set because no companies submitted their applications.

A meeting of FDA officials will take place on June 28th to consider whether Covid vaccines must be changed to address mutations. According to FDA officials, the U.S. must quickly decide whether to change the vaccines to be ready for a fall wave of infections. Moderna and Pfizer both study shots to target the omicron variation as well the original strain which was discovered in Wuhan (China) in 2019.

The FDA Panel, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VABPC), holds open meetings where scientists and independent doctors discuss data that supports a vaccine company. This panel will then make recommendations to FDA on whether or not the vaccine should be approved. Although the FDA may not be bound by these recommendations, it is usually a good idea.

Moderna had asked the FDA to approve its Covid two-dose vaccine for children aged six to five years. The FDA committee has already begun their busy June schedule. The FDA has been taking months to approve a vaccine that would benefit this age group.

Pfizer’s vaccine, a three-shot shot for children under 5 years old, was being fast tracked by the FDA in February. However, the FDA refused to speed up the application of the FDA because it didn’t have enough data. Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s CEO, has stated that the third shot would provide greater protection against omicron.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Covid was spread five times faster than the peak period when the delta variant prevailed in children younger than 5. Data from the CDC national blood survey shows that 75% of the children who were affected by the virus in the United States have contracted it at one point or another during the epidemic.

Some Americans have also been waiting for the authorization of Novavax’s vaccine. Novavax will become the first Covid vaccine on the market after being approved by FDA.

Novavax was an early participant in Operation Warp Speed, the U.S. government’s race to develop a vaccine against Covid in 2020. Moderna and Pfizer eventually beat Novavax because of manufacturing problems.

Novavax makes the virus spike without infecting the human body. Novavax injects the genetic code of the virus spike into an insect cell-infecting baculovirus.
