NEW YORK, (Reuters) – A judge in New York denied Donald Trump’s request to have a contempt of court finding against him dismissed. Instead, he imposed a $10,000 per day fine for failing to follow a subpoena from the state attorney general to investigate the business practices at Trump’s family firm, The Trump Organization.

Justice Arthur Engoron, New York State Court in Manhattan stated that he wasn’t satisfied with Trump’s affidavit and claimed there was no evidence Trump conducted an exhaustive search of the records requested by New York Attorney General Letitia Jacob.

The judge stated, “I’m surprised that he doesn’t appear to have any documents. They’re all with organization.”

Trump attorney Alina Habba said that he would consider his request to end the fine. “But I will consider your request to terminate the fine,” he said to Trump lawyer Alina Habba.

James said that her probe revealed evidence that Trump Organization manages properties around the world such as hotels, golf courses, and other real-estate. This was in order to get financial incentives like favorable loans or tax breaks.

Trump is a Republican and has called the investigation politically motivated. James is a Democrat.
