DOBROPILLIA/KYIV Ukraine (Reuters) – Ukraine’s shelling caused civilian death and injury in its southern region of Kherson. Russia claimed that it had pounding eastern and southern areas with missile strikes while civilians escaped from a Mariupol steel plant.

After failing to seize the capital Kyiv, Moscow now focuses its attention on Ukraine’s east and south after a nine week-long offensive that left cities shattered and killed thousands and drove more than 5,000,000 people to flee to Europe.

They have seized the city of Kherson and established a stronghold in the area just 100km (60 miles) north-east of Russian-annexed Crimea.

According to the Russian RIA news agency, Ukraine’s defense ministry has accused Russia of shelling a school and kindergarten in Kyselivka, Shyroka balka, in the Kherson region.

The ministry didn’t provide further details. The report was not immediately responded to by Ukraine, although Reuters couldn’t independently confirm it.

Russia won Mariupol, despite the fact that hundreds of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers sought shelter at Azovstal’s steel works.

United Nations called for an evacuation plan. A Ukrainian soldier inside claimed that around 20 children and women had made it to safety.

Sviatoslav Palmar stated that “we are getting civilians from the rubble with ropes” referring specifically to the destruction within the plant which covers four square kilometers (1.5 mi).

Palamar stated that Russia and Ukraine respect a ceasefire and that he hopes the evacuated citizens will be transferred to Zaporizhzhia in the northwestern part of Ukraine.

Russia and the United Nations have not commented on the evacuations. Officials from Ukraine claim that hundreds of Ukrainians still live in the steel works.

ODESA TRIKE

According to Maksym Marchenko the regional governor, the Russian missile from Crimea hit the Odesa main runway in the West. However, no one was injured.

Ukraine’s military declared that the airport couldn’t be used anymore. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President of Ukraine, vowed that it would be rebuilt, stating in late-night video, “Odesa won’t forget Russia’s behavior towards it.”

The strike by Moscow was not commented on, as their forces regularly target Ukraine’s third-largest urban area. In a recent Russian attack, eight civilians were killed, Ukrainian officials claimed.

Moscow’s invasion of the south is partly designed to make the area more connected with Crimea. The Russians are pushing for full control over Ukraine’s eastern Donbas. There, Russian-backed separatists had previously seized parts of Luhansk or Donetsk before Moscow invaded.

Zelenskiy stated that Russia is “gathering new forces for new strikes against our military units in the east” and was trying to intensify pressure in Donbas.

Moscow describes its actions as a “special operations” meant to dearm Ukraine and eliminate anti-Russian nationalism that was fomented by Western powers. According to the West, Russia declared an unprovoked war on aggression against Ukraine.

Despite having held peace talks for weeks, the two sides appeared to be at odds on Saturday.

Moscow has denied that Ukraine claims Russian troops are responsible for atrocities perpetrated in Kyiv and surrounding areas in April. Since then, the video links have allowed for communication by video link between negotiators who last spoke face to face on March 29.

“EVERYTHING IS DELETED”

America and its European allies have placed severe sanctions against Russia and provided weapons and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of Britain said Saturday that Britain will not stop “giving the Ukrainians the equipment necessary to defend themselves”.

U.S. President Joe Biden wants a $33Billion aid package for Kyiv. This includes $20 billion for arms.

Biden spoke at the dinner of the White House Correspondents Association in Washington and praised journalists who covered the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Biden stated on Saturday that “a poison runs through our democracy…with disinformation massively rising.” The free press matters more now than ever before in this century.

On Sunday, Britain’s Foreign Office stated that Russia used a troll farm to spread misinformation on the war in Ukraine through social media.

“We cannot allow the Kremlin and its shady troll farms to invade our online spaces with their lies about Putin’s illegal war,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement.

Dobropillia was hit by the strike’s shockwave on Saturday. It blew through an apartment block and caused a massive crater to form in its yard.

A resident, who only gave his first name as Andriy, stated that his partner had been knocked unconscious while standing in the living room. “Thank you, God the children were in my kitchen,” he stated.

In order to save what little they had, many people went through their possessions.

Oleh, another resident said sarcastically, “At 9:20 am, this happiness flew into our home.” “Everything has been destroyed.”

Russia has reported that more Ukrainians have attacked its territory.

Bryansk, which is bordered by Ukraine and Belarus, officials said that air defenses prevented a Ukrainian plane from landing, however, the resultant shelling damaged parts of an oil terminal in Russia.

Roman Starovoit said that several rounds from Ukraine were fired at a checkpoint in Kursk south of Bryansk. However, there were no injuries or casualties.

Although Ukraine does not claim responsibility, it did describe a string of explosions that occurred in Russia’s South on Wednesday as “karma” and payback for Moscow’s invasion.
