Turkish police detain dozens in May Day demonstrations -Breaking

ISTANBUL, (Reuters) – Several protesters tried to enter Istanbul’s Taksim Square in support of May Day demonstrations against the economic hardship created by raging inflation.
Istanbul Governor’s Office had permitted May Day celebrations in another area and declared gatherings at all other places illegal and unauthorised.
Journalist for Reuters saw riot police accosting and handcuffing protesters. These images were then shown by television stations in the country.
The Demiroren News Agency also reported that police detained 30 persons in central Besiktas as well 22 in Sisli.
On Sunday, the Istanbul Governor’s office released a statement stating that 164 protestors were being held in Istanbul “for trying to hold illegal demos.”
As part of International Labour Day festivities in many countries, marches organized by unions and workers are held every May 1.
According to a Reuters poll, Turkey’s annual inflation rate will rise to 68% by April. This is due to rising commodity prices and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Multiple groups cited the rise in inflation and economic difficulties it caused in May Day Statements.
Ergun Atalay of the Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions, Turk-Is stated “Our main topic this year was cost of living.” He placed a wreath at Taksim Square.
