STRASBURG, (Reuters) – European Union nations will no longer import Russian oil or refined products. The head of the executive European Commission proposed Wednesday a sixth round in sanctions against Moscow over its war crimes.

Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Parliament would be phasing out Russian oil supply within six months. She also promised to phase out refined products before the end of this year. This was met with applause by lawmakers. It will ban all imports from Russia of Russian oil, both seaborne and pipe, and crude as well.

“It won’t be easy. Some member countries are highly dependent on Russian oil. “But we just need to work on that,” von der Leyen added about the proposal. The proposal requires approval from each of 27 EU member countries for it to go into effect.
