BOSTON (Reuters] – After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled this week that Boston City Hall violated a Christian group’s constitutional freedom of speech rights, the Satanic Temple requested to fly their flag above the hall. The flag was to display the cross and the flag would not be allowed to be raised.

After the ruling, Salem’s Satanic Temple in Massachusetts filed a request on Tuesday to the city’s department to raise its flag for Satanic Appreciation Week (July 23-29).

The program allowed private parties to use the flagpole for events held in the plaza beneath. In the midst of the lawsuit, the city ended the program and said that it was reevaluating the program.

When asked about the request of the Satanic Temple, the spokesperson for Mayor Michelle Wu stated that the program had been suspended and the city is reviewing Monday’s decision by the High Court.

The Satanic Temple is also called the United Federation of Churches LLC. It promotes benevolence among those who reject tyrannical power.

The Supreme Court ruled that Boston’s decision to reject Camp Constitution, a Christian group, and Harold Shurtleff, its director were in violation of their First Amendment right to free speech.

Boston stated that the raising of the cross flag at Camp Constitution could be considered a violation of another provision of the First Amendment, which prohibits government endorsement of any particular religion.

Boston said it was unable to require “all comers” to use the flagpole. This could lead to it raising flags that promote intolerance or division, like a swastika flag or one representing a terrorist organization.

A request by the Satanic Temple for comments on Thursday was not answered immediately.
