WASHINGTON (Reuters] -The leaders of Group of Seven (G7) are scheduled to meet on Sunday with Volodymyr Zeleskiy, the Ukrainian president. This follows a statement by Joe Biden, U.S. President of America earlier this week that suggested they might discuss additional measures in response Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Talks will focus on the war’s latest developments, efforts to bolster Ukraine and ways to demonstrate “continued G7 unity in our collective response, including by imposing severe costs for Putin’s war,” a spokesperson for the White House’s National Security Council said on Monday.

According to the spokesperson, leaders from the G7 countries (which include Americas, Britain, France and Germany as well as Japan, Canada, Japan, Canada, Japan, Australia, Canada, and Italy) will meet with Zelenskiy via virtual meetings on Sunday morning.

Previous agreements between the U.S. government and its allies included a range of sanctions that targeted Russian officials, banks and other entities. These were aimed at punishing Moscow’s actions including war crimes. Russia describes the invasion of Ukraine as an operation that demilitarizes, “denazifies” Ukraine.

Biden indicated Wednesday that he was open to discussing additional sanctions against Moscow to stop its war on Ukraine.

After the European Union had proposed the toughest sanctions ever against Russia, including an oil embargo, he said to reporters, “I’ll talk with the G7 members this week about the things we’re going do or don’t do.”

Janet Yellen, U.S. Treasury Secretary, declined Wednesday to give a preview of any actions. However she said that the United States is in continuous discussions and would continue to exert pressure on Moscow.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will be participating in the call. A televised speech to the German people is also planned for Sunday.

A spokesperson for the German government stated that the date commemorates the second anniversary of World War Two. It also has a special significance this year because Russia and Ukraine — both victims Nazi Germany’s policies — are at war.
