The cities Americans moved to the most in 2021, according to Penske

According to a study by The American Institute of Architects, fewer Americans move than ever. recent U.S. Census Bureau data — but a new report says the people who are taking the plunge are flocking to some familiar cities.

Penske’s truck rental company Penske was dominated by Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Houston in this year’s Penske annual Top Moving DestinationsThe report uses data obtained from the one-way customer truck rental reservations to create a list with 10 of America’s most popular cities for moving. The Sun Belt was the most popular, followed by Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas.

In 2020, eight of the 10 cities were included on the list. This is a pandemic-era continuity. The two newcomers this year — Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina — reappeared after a five-year and three-year hiatus from the list, respectively.

 According to Penske’s Report, these are the top 10 destinations in 2021.

  4. Charlotte, North Carolina (which isn’t in the top ten) the top 10 since 2017)

Penske states that it started compiling its annual lists in 2010 and has continued to do so ever since. U-Haul publishes an annual list. similar reportEach year, data is taken from the one-way rentals of customers transactions. Most recently, it identified Tennessee, Texas, Florida as top states to movers.

Historic drop in nation’s moving rate reportAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau 8.4% of 2021 residents changed their residences, a decrease from 9.3% in 2020. This is the lowest rate since 1948 when the Bureau began collecting data and it was less than half of the initial year.

It’s not an epidemic. The annual rate of change has been declining or stabilizing over the last five years. In the same period of time, almost all Americans that moved in recent years have returned to their home state. Very few individuals are now moving out of state.

There were two main trends identified by the report as a result of the pandemic. These are: less international movers due to restrictions on international travel, and fewer job-related movers.
