KYIV (Reuters), – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that new equipment and weapons for Ukraine were being purchased after a surprise visit to Kyiv.

Speaking at a press conference following talks with Volodymyr Zielenskiy, Trudeau also stated that Canada is imposing additional sanctions on Russian people and entities as a result of Moscow’s invasion in Ukraine.

Trudeau stated, “Today I am announcing additional military assistance drone cameras satellite imagery small arms and ammunition, as well funding for demining operation financing.”

“We’re bringing forth new sanctions against 40 Russian individuals, five entities, the oligarchs, and close associates in the defense sector regime, all of whom are complicit in Putin’s war,” refers to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trudeau visited Irpin, a town outside Kyiv that was the center of intense battles between Ukrainian troops and Russian troops. Trudeau also saw the Russians withdraw late March.

Canada would reopen its Embassy in Kiev, he said.

Canada also provided $25 million to U.N. World Food Programme in an effort to ensure food security. Canada would eliminate trade tariffs for all Ukrainian imports into Canada next year.
